About Pigeon Groundskeeping

Kevin has been operating Pigeon Groundskeeping since 2020 on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. In 2017, he graduated from Capilano University with a Bachelor in Tourism & Hospitality Management. He is proud to have graduated from Pacific Horticulture College with a Certification of Landscape Horticulture in 2025 and is Red Seal Certification- in progress. He received the Sue Tice Plant ID Award & the BC Council of Garden Clubs Award for Best Design. In addition, he also holds a Master Gardener Certificate from Gaia College.

Kevin grew up on a quiet property that included large annual beds, cedar hedgerows, specimen tree's and vegetable patches. The work he does today he attributes to the skills and passion he gained from the gardens he used to tend whilst growing up. Since moving to Salt Spring Island, he has experienced agricultural opportunities such as managing a blueberry farm, a large animal farm and a vineyard. All of these positions teaching him valuable lessons like perseverance and determination.

Since 2017, Island life includes plenty of outdoor time whether at work or in his own garden. Growing flowers for arrangements and creating annual & seasonal displays are some of his favourite things to do. When he is not thinking about plants, he is likely with his partner hiking with their dog scheming their next coastal adventure.

"The best part about my job is I am trusted to create art for my clients when designing and caring for their beautiful gardens."

Design Style

At Pigeon Groundskeeping, our gardens are created with inspiration from designers who have successfully found complimentary pairings and themes. Using design principles like form, colour and texture, each garden and outdoor space we create is unique emoting a sense of an enclosure yet expansiveness.

Autumnal Colour

It is no secret that a well-balanced garden has all-season interest, creating visual displays throughout the year. The days shorten & blooms fade, but there is an effect in autumnal gardens that is difficult to recreate in other seasons, such as fading grasses like Purple Moor Grass, Giant Miscanthus & Pennisetum shimmer with dew. When they are backlight by the setting sun, it is a feast for the eyes.

Very few plants bloom in the autumn so profusely as the iconic light purple Aster's. Autumnal gardens are complete with Japanese Maples and their stunning fall earthy town colour display. Gardening with fall & winter interest is a planting style we are pleased to design and recreate for your space.

Inspirational Designers

Piet Oudolf

One of our favourite notable designers who pioneered the large herbaceous mixed border swaths in English gardens. Piet is known for designing based on the seasonal life-cycle of the plant, emphasizing features like seed and leaf shapes. Piet's knowledge of using long-lived perennials inspires us to create effortless, layered swaths that draw your eye through the garden.

Gertrude Jekyll

Famous for her cool tones blending into warm tones and returning back to cool, Gertrude's garden's in England were cottage-style yet had formal elements of Yew hedges & topiary's. The mixed borders juxtaposed with manicured green lawns created a sea of colour and movement whilst remaining sophisticated. Her design principles remain as useful guides in regard to selecting correct material, respect in craftsmanship and following a successful planting guide that is methodical and pleasing.

Mediterranean Seaside

In the Greater Victoria area & the Gulf Islands, there is a favourable climate for warm-loving, drought-tolerant plants that one might associate with hotter climates. These plants require very little maintenance, providing abundant pollination opportunities and are sometimes even edible. This is one of our preferred planting themes as most of our clients seek low-maintenance yet long-lasting interest.

Some favourable elements are the opaque cool tones, swaths of height from the Feather Reed Grass, Artemisia & Tall Verbena. The blue tones of Globe Thistle & Trailing Rosemary create a colour display in contrast with the silvery-green foliage hues.
